Hotel Address
P.o. Box 5637, St Johns, NF, A1C 5W8
The Fairmont Newfoundland stands on the site of Fort William where British troops were stationed in the early 17th century. A national historic marker on a retaining wall in Cavendish Square, where the hotel is located, tells of the battles that were fought here.
The Fairmont Newfoundland was built in 1982 on the site of the first Hotel Newfoundland, which opened its doors on "the rock", as St. John's, Newfoundland is referred to, in 1926. The elegant hotel lobby leads to, and overlooks, a spacious atrium called the Court Garden, which is filled with a wide variety of trees and plants. A waterfall flows from the entrance of the Narrows Quiet Bar to the atrium below. Guests can sip a drink and enjoy the piano in the Court Garden, or listen from above.
The old hotel played an important role in the development of St. John's and Newfoundland as a whole, playing host to visitors from near and far. The old hotel had, in fact, barely been open when it hosted its first meeting, the Newfoundland Medical Convention, in 1926. The Fairmont Newfoundland continues to carry this tradition of friendly hospitality into the future.
