Women Travelers
It is not that hard for a woman to travel alone. Basically we all (men and women) have the same trouble while traveling, we all have to carry our backpack, run after the train, fight for a seat on a crowded train or search for a hostel on a busy summer day.
Women should have more precautions since there are always men who think that can enamor any girl they see, rob or attack her.
This also happens at home and it changes from country to country, but there are several things that you can do to keep yourself safe:
- Avoid direct eye contact with undesirable people. Take some dark eyeglasses with you so they don't realize that you are looking at them.
- Avoid being alone by night. If you wish to go to a bar then hang out with other girls that you have meet at the hostel.
- Don't call the attention with a fancy camera case, carry an ugly one. It is better to keep a low profile.
- Consider the local dress codes. In souther Italy you should not wear shorts or mini skirts, they will think you are provoking them... by the way in Italy you cannot enter into a Church with shorts or your shoulders uncovered.
- Wear loose clothes, so you don't call the attention.
- If you feel yourself threatened, go to places where there's more people.
- When you travel in train by night look for compartments where there are mostly women.
- When you go to a hostel check if your shared room has only women sleeping there... it happens that when hostels are too crowded they mix genders very "gently".
- Buy a newspaper and make sure everyone sees it. People will confuse you with a local.
