Train Pass Rules
Validate your pass up front in the train station before your first journey, and do not write anything to it before it has been validated in the train station. You can star using your pass within 6 months after you purchase it. The validation consist of validity dates, a stamp and your passport numbers; again: the ticket agent must do this. If you do not validate your pass you can get a fine of US$50.
The working mechanism is a follows: when you get in the train you write down the date in the Europass ticket (with ink), so when the inspector comes he'll see the date and will stamp right on top of it. Later on you'll get off the train and if in the same day you want to take another train you are free to do so, and you do not have to write the date on the ticket again. If a new inspector comes he'll see the date and the stamp and will go by his business.
If you screw it and you write down a wrong date, or it is illegible, whatever happens you have to use a new box, and you loose one day. So be careful, Don't use erasable ink, tampering with the pass will cost you a fine of US$100, plus the full fare and your pass will be confiscated.
But, What happens if you want to travel overnight? If the train departs after the 19:00 hrs., then you must write the date of the next day, and the ticket will be valid for 29 hours, great isn't it? To learn more about night trains go to our Night Trains Section.
Once you get your pass, you must keep it safe. If it is stolen or lost it cannot be replaced and you cannot buy it in Europe. The best you can do to protect yourself is to buy a US$15 insurance to protect your pass (don't loose the insurance receipt neither!!!).
