. Train Travel

Traveling by Train is by far the most efficient way to travel around Europe; it is fast, reliable, departs on time, you do not have to drive at night, and you do not have to worry about where to park the car. However, there are some horror stories about values being robbed in night trains, but this is just a matter of being careful and not leaving your stuff on sight.

There are several choices to choose from when selecting your tickets. You can buy single point to point tickets, or you can buy passes that give you unlimited travel in the European trains.

Some special passes, like the Eurail Select Pass or the Eurail Pass are available only for foreigners visiting Europe and there are others, like Interrail, for those who live in Europe, or have been there for at least 6 months.

The different tickets are:

For Non-European citizens:
  • Eurail Pass. You can travel in 17 countries, from 10 days up to 15 days of travel in two months, or 15 days to 3 months of consecutive travel This pass is useful if you plan to make really a lot of travel.
  • Eurail Select Pass. You can travel in 3, 4 or 5 adjacent countries of the 17 countries of the Eurail network, and you can enjoy of 5 to 15 days of travel in a period of two months. This is a cheaper pass and still gives you a lot of freedom.
  • Single Country Passes. These are valid only for one country or specific region, they are very useful if you want to explore a very specific zone in Europe.
  • For European citizens (or anyone who has lived more than 6 months in Europe)
  • Interrail. It works slightly different from the Eurail Pass: in the Interrail pass Europe is divided in 8 zones and you can travel in one or more zones. This is actually a better buy than the Eurail pass.
  • Eurodomino. This is a country specific pass based on the Interrail network.
  • For everyone:
  • Single Tickets. Point to point tickets are also an option when the Eurail Pass does not really pay, or many times people reserves the Eurail Pass for the long expensive trips and buy single tickets for the small trips, making the most of you money.
